Henry Holland: 'technology is transforming fashion but making us so vain'

(Photo:mermaid prom dresses uk)

Holland, 32, predicts that technology will open up fashion shows, with augmented reality streams giving consumers product information and details about where to buy the clothes.

He said it could also make the buying process easier and faster, rather than having to wait for months after a show.

He added: "There’s only so long that fashion houses are going to spend huge amounts of money on shows and not get their money back. The fact that those looks are on Instagram while the public has to wait three months to purchase them seems so backward."

In September he recruited friends Daisy Lowe and Alexa Chung to buy his clothes straight off the catwalk at London Fashion Week. And although the purpose of fashion shows might change, he said they will not disappear.

Holland added that the evolving nature of social media had led to people becoming more conscious of how they look.

"The fact that we broadcast our lives all over the internet means all aspects of our lives become more curated," he said.

"People are conscious about what their houses look like in their Instagram feeds and they’re conscious of their outfits. If they like their outfit they’ll post it, it’s show-off. People are more conscious of what their lives look like and we all know the reality is you’re sat by yourself with a hot chocolate."

Holland has created a phone case with goo.ey that lets people use their phone hands-free by sticking it to glass and mirrors. It is available from House of Holland’s online shop and Selfridges.Read more at:pink prom dresses

Playing with fashion as you age

I went into a well-known department store the other day to buy a hat. I thought it would be a fairly simple process because walking my dog was involved. I needed something simple to wear with my walking clothes – a straightforward t-shirt and skirt. The exercise took a little longer than I had hoped because when I described what I wanted, the sales assistant looked at me with a face of, and I kid you not, complete horror!

Am I alone in feeling like a fish out of water when it comes to fashion shopping these days? Is everything meant for those who are young and slim and tall?

Feeling a bit miffed, I took the rare step of buying a whole bunch of fashion magazines. I wanted to see what I was not “getting”. It was a sobering experience…well it was until I spoke to a Perth fashion stylist anyway.

“What you see in those magazines is all about fantasy”, she said. “Few of us will ever buy clothes like that, let alone wear them. The models you are looking at are beautiful coat hangers”. She had made her point and it made sense too. But what she said next really surprised me.

“What we all need to do as we get older is to revisit the pleasure of playing with fashion. Spend a morning going around the shops with an actual purpose in mind – trying on a bunch of different stuff, just to see how it looks”.

I wonder how for many people, and for women in particular, we follow the process of entirely giving ourselves up to whatever stage of life we are going through and quite often it involves caring for others to the extent that we lose sight of our own sense of self. So, when it comes time to re-focus, say in our 60s after the kids have left home, we may be left with few personal resources and end up just not caring much or at best, making do when it comes to feeling and looking good. One of the things that I’ve heard many women say is that they want their appearance as older women to reflect the person they still are inside. And many feel this is not happening.

There is a way forward, one of many available to us and it does not involve mindless retail therapy! The idea is to try to learn to play again and to find out what you really like, or better still, love.

As most of us would be aware having dressed ourselves every day for a number of decades, it is important to look at and simply accept your body shape and to learn to be comfortable with it. Go to the shops, select some things you may not have even considered before and see how they look! The main aim is to create a simple and attractive silhouette. When it comes to colours try and work out what suits you best, what makes your face come alive and develop your wardrobe with those in mind.

So the message is that the power remains with each of us. If you don’t already do it, the time has come to invest some care in yourself, after all we have been caring for others all our lives!Read more at:http://www.marieprom.co.uk/prom-dresses-2014-2015

Adrien Brody’s Five Favorite Things

(Photo:sexy prom dresses uk)

Adrien Brody is best known for having won an Oscar in 2003 for “The Pianist.” But now the 42-year-old Queens native is making his mark in another genre: fine art. This week, as part of Art Basel Miami Beach, Mr. Brody will be showing his first series of paintings at Domingo Zapata’s pop-up gallery at the Lulu Laboratorium. Titled “Hotdogs, Hamburgers and Handguns,” the series, according to Mr. Brody, accounts for pop culture obsessions, including fast food and violence. Below, he shares five of his favorite things.

SWEATSHIRT I wear my Bonds gray hoodie almost every day. I got it as a gift, and it’s lightweight and kind of the perfect fit. It also fits in my nomadic lifestyle right now. I can throw it in my backpack at a moment’s notice.

SHOES A pair of Steve Madden black combat boots were part of my character’s wardrobe on a movie, and I basically took them home with me. They zip up the sides. I’ve bought a second pair since, though, because I like them so much. I’ll wear them with a suit or just with a pair of jeans while hanging out. I’ve worn them even with a tuxedo before. I’m sure some fashion critic has drawn a big red circle around my feet labeling it as a fashion faux pas.

JACKET I’m normally pretty monochromatic. It’s probably because of growing up in New York and just the ease of grabbing something and running out the door. But for some reason my purple Dolce & Gabbana motorcycle jacket works. I’ll layer it with the hoodie when I travel. If you’ve noticed, everything is zip-up. I can undress rapidly!

WATCH I’m a Bulgari ambassador, and I wear the Bulgari Octo watch. I like this particular one because it’s understated and elegant and, again, versatile. Before Bulgari, though, I’ve always loved elegant or well-designed mechanical things. I used to restore muscle cars when I was in high school. Then when I started making money, I bought watches. Some of them are wonderful to just marvel at.

CAP My favorite thing, and this is really the truth, is a “King Kong” baseball hat. It’s been with me since the premiere of “King Kong,” so it’s maybe 10 years old now. We had closed down several theaters in Times Square for the premiere, and there was this guy hawking “King Kong” merchandise. Here I am being ushered down the street and this guy saw me and ran over and gave it to me. It meant so much to me. Now it comes with me everywhere I go. It affords me a little anonymity when I have it on. It’s fallen into a lake when I was boating, and I went back and retrieved it. You could say it’s lived-in.Read more at:one shoulder prom dresses uk
